2024 eInvoice Initiative in Malaysia: Taxilla's Role

The exciting news is on the horizon for businesses in Malaysia as the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRBM/LHDN) is set to launch a groundbreaking eInvoice pilot starting May 2024. With approximately 50 businesses already participating, the IRBM is actively encouraging more enterprises to join this transformative e-invoicing initiative. The pilot serves as a crucial step in testing the effectiveness of the IRBM system and addressing any challenges in connecting with it for efficient invoice processing in Malaysia.

Key Milestones and Mandates

Commencing from August 2024, eInvoice Malaysia becomes mandatory for companies with revenues exceeding RM 100 million, and from January 2025, this mandate extends to those with revenues exceeding RM 25 million. This requirement applies to both B2B and B2C transactions. The B2B sector will adopt a continuous transaction control model, while the B2C sector will follow a reporting model for their invoices in Malaysia.

Why Participate in the Pilot?

  1. Early Adoption Benefits: Adopting e-invoicing in Malaysia early allows businesses to identify internal process gaps, enabling timely course corrections to mitigate the risk of non-compliance.
  2. Industry-Specific Consideration: Participation in the pilot provides a platform for businesses to highlight industry-specific use cases, ensuring these are considered by the IRBM.
  3. Data Enrichment Opportunities: Businesses can use the pilot phase to identify missing data points essential for IRBM Malaysia-compliant eInvoices and establish data enrichment rules for comprehensive eInvoicing.
  4. Security Control Understanding: Gain insights into the security controls involved and understand the implementation challenges in integrating these controls into accounting or ERP software.
  5. Operational Efficiency: Understand how companies can leverage the eInvoice mandate in Malaysia to automate invoice processes, enhancing operational efficiency.
